Effie is a natural tank who boasts the highest base attack in the game. The build where Effie shines best is her Distant Counter build. With her high HP pool and Wary Fighter, she is exceedingly difficult to KO without taking counter damage from her. With a high Mt weapon like Deft Harpoon+ or Silver Lance+ on top of her high base Atk, she has the potential to dish out a hefty amount of damage while tanking the majority of the game. Ranged units who could previously kite her now have to face Effie's counterattack wrath. Her high HP also allows her to make effective use out of HP-based Ploys such as Panic Ploy, fantastic for debuffing specific team-based compositions (eg. Cavalry or Flier-based teams) as well as -blade tome-based teams (eg. Nino).

Her other build focuses more on player phase, making use of Brave Lance+. Her default Death Blow only further increases her attack when she initiates on enemies, capable of one-shotting most enemies she's pitted against. The Spd penalty from the Brave weapon matters little with her already low Spd and Wary Fighter. However, the Brave Lance+ build still makes her extremely vulnerable on the enemy phase. With her one range movement as an Armored unit, it can be incredibly easy to kite her even with positioning assists to help boost her movement such as Pivot. This can be mostly remedied by having her or an ally take Armor March, but still is a downside compared to other more mobile Brave users who do not have to rely on a movement-increasing skill.

Despite having a few flaws, these still are minor marks compared to her dominating ability to tank hits and decimate almost any enemy she attacks. Effie dominates her position as a physical nuke/tanker and will most definitely prove a strong asset on most teams.

Highlights[edit source]

Pros Cons

+ Tanky unit with high HP and Defense

+ High base attack

+ Extremely high OHKO potential, especially in a Brave Lance+ build

+ Cannot be naturally doubled

- Mediocre Resistance, and Wary Fighter does not stop incoming double attacks from Brave weapons

- Being an armored unit, she has lesser mobility and can only move one square

- Extra vulnerable to Lancebreaker

Checks & Counters[edit source]

  • Bulky Green Units: These units include heroes such as  Icon Portrait Hector.png Hector who do massive damage to Effie while taking almost nothing in return.
  • High Attack Mages: Effie struggles against mages who can one-shot through her Wary Fighter such as  Icon Portrait Nino.png Nino with Gronnblade+ buffs.
  • High Attack Green Units: Units such as  Icon Portrait Cherche.png Cherche with Brave Axe+ and Death Blow negates Wary Fighter with the Brave weapon, letting the unit double Effie to death regardless of her defenses.
  • Lancebreaker: This skill negates Effie's Wary Fighter as long as the unit outspeeds Effie by 5. Because Effie's Spd stat is one of the lowest in the game (And even lower in a Brave Lance+ build), this is not a difficult feat to achieve allowing Lancebreaker users to double and kill Effie.

Team Options[edit source]

  •  Icon Portrait Ryoma.png Ryoma: Although pretty much any other Red Sword can also be used to cover Effie's green weakness, Ryoma is notable not only as a Red Sword who can easily dispatch of most green units that Effie has trouble against, but also because he has Distant Counter built-in to his weapon Raijinto. This allows him the flexibility to either initiate or bait in enemies such as enemy green mages (eg. Nino, Julia). However, since Ryoma's Res is not stellar, care should still be taken against green mages, especially buffed ones.
  •  Icon Portrait Hector.png Hector: Another Armored teammate for Effie, meaning Armored buffs for both of them (and other potential Armored teammates). While Hector gives Effie much appreciated buffs, she pays back the favor by covering Hector's weakness against Red users.
  •  Icon Portrait Cherche.png Cherche: Although Cherche and Effie play similar roles on a team, if a player is aiming for a hyper-offensive team with multiple nuke users, Cherche and Effie become strong teammates. With Brave builds, both of them initiate and absolutely decimate most units in front of them. While Cherche covers most Greens and Blues, Effie also covers Blues and the Reds that Cherche misses out on.
  • Armor March Allies: Effie can either run Armor March herself or have an ally that runs Armor March. Works best on Brave Lance+ Effie where she sorely needs the additional movement. Can be very effective on tripping up people who aren't paying attention to skills on defense as well.

Distant Effie

Like most armored units, due to her lack of movement, Effie is often picked off or damaged for free fairly easily by ranged enemies while trying to approach her target. On top of that, with a Dancer or positioning skills on the other team, these ranged units can essentially move out of Effie's range and kite her until she dies. Thus, this build takes and revolves around Distant Counter.png Distant Counter to deal with ranged units. Although not an extreme player phase powerhouse like Brave Effie, this build is still extremely potent due to her already high base Atk. For many ranged units who cannot one-shot Effie or lack the Defense to take a hit, this build shuts these units down. Thanks to Effie's already-high base Atk, tankiness and Wary Fighter, this build still poses a threat to melee units as well, making her a more rounded unit.

For her IVs, to start -Spd is her bane of choice. Not only is this because her Spd is already abysmally low, but because with Wary Fighter, she doesn't need to worry about her Spd being even lower. +Atk is taken as her boon to increase the damage Effie can dish out. Other boons are acceptable to increase her tankiness.

Icon Skill Weapon.png Deft Harpoon+Icon Skill Weapon.png Deft Harpoon+ (14 Mt, 300 SP)

Effect: If unit has 100% HP at start of combat, unit gets Atk/Spd/Def/Res+2.
If attacking, unit will take 2 damage after combat.
is taken as her weapon of choice. Deft Harpoon+ provides an overall stat boost for Effie's first engagement. However, this weapon is not only an expensive investment but was an exclusive weapon limited to the Ylissean Summer (Focus) and no longer available. Icon Skill Weapon.png Slaying Lance+Icon Skill Weapon.png Slaying Lance+ (14 Mt, 300 SP)

Effect: Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1).
is also a strong alternative that also has high Mt and decreases her special cooldown by 1. This means she run Icon Skill Special.png BonfireIcon Skill Special.png Bonfire (3 CD, 200 SP)

Effect: Boosts damage dealt by 50% of unit's Def.
at the same charge cooldown as a regular Moonbow with much greater damage thanks to Effie's high Def. Alternatively, Effie's default weapon Icon Skill Weapon.png Silver Lance+Icon Skill Weapon.png Silver Lance+ (15 Mt, 300 SP)

Effect:
can be used instead if neither option is available.

Defensively, the build keeps Effie's default B-slot passive Wary Fighter 3.png Wary Fighter 3 to prevent other units from doubling Effie. This is what allows Effie to successfully survive most encounters despite her low Spd. Without it, she will lose several match ups against speedier units such as mages.

Icon Skill Assist.png PivotIcon Skill Assist.png Pivot (150 SP)

Effect: Unit moves to opposite side of adjacent ally.
is chosen as her Assist of choice due to armored units appreciating the extra movement. Icon Skill Assist.png SwapIcon Skill Assist.png Swap (150 SP)

Effect: Swap places with an adjacent ally.
can also be taken as well. Swap is typically seen on tankier units. For example, one common scenario is using Swap on an ally who is in range of the enemy. Unlike other skills like Reposition which will keep both heroes out of range, Swap will leave one unit in range. Effie is fantastic at taking hits, thus Swap is a potential Assist skill that can be taken as well.

For her special, Icon Skill Special.png MoonbowIcon Skill Special.png Moonbow (2 CD, 200 SP)

Effect: Resolve combat as if foe suffered Def/Res-30%.
is selected due to its quick charge time and extra damage, but as mentioned before, she can opt for 3-charge specials if running Slaying Lance+ such as Icon Skill Special.png BonfireIcon Skill Special.png Bonfire (3 CD, 200 SP)

Effect: Boosts damage dealt by 50% of unit's Def.
or Icon Skill Special.png Draconic AuraIcon Skill Special.png Draconic Aura (3 CD, 200 SP)

Effect: Grants +30% to Atk.
.

For her C passive, Panic Ploy 3.png Panic Ploy 3 works well on Effie due to her high HP, and allows her to reverse the buffs prevalent on common themed teams (Cavalry, Flying Unit, Armored). This also includes teams that revolve around a -blade tome mage and buffs. Since a green mage with Gronnblade+ (eg.  Icon Portrait Nino.png Nino) has the potential to one-shot Effie, using Panic Ploy to reverse these buffs means Effie has the chance to not only survive a -blade attack, but also potentially kill the mage on the counter.

Otherwise, her C-slot is left open for whatever else a team may need such as Hone Buffs, Threaten / Other Ploy Debuffs, etc.

Her Seal is Distant Def 3.png Distant Def 3, which helps mitigate the damage she takes from a range. Alternatively, she could use Panic Ploy 3.png Panic Ploy 3, which would free up her C skill slot for another armor buff.

Brave Effie
Click to show/hide build description
This build turns Effie into a player phase monster.. With the highest base attack in the game along with Death Blow 3.png Death Blow 3's +6 Atk on initiation, she can break through almost any red or blue unit with two strikes alone. While this build does give her one of the scariest offensive player phases in the game, her lack of movement means she has a hard time approaching units without heavy positioning assistance. Against ranged enemies (especially mages), her lack of movement weakness becomes even more apparent since most of the time any ranged unit will be able to engage on her first during her weaker enemy phase.

Defensively, Wary Fighter 3.png Wary Fighter 3 is selected to ignore her already low Spd, brought even lower by Brave Lance+, negating Brave weapon users' greatest weakness. Wary Fighter is also why -Spd is Effie's bane of choice in this build. With her high Def, Icon Skill Special.png BonfireIcon Skill Special.png Bonfire (3 CD, 200 SP)

is taken as her special of choice to beef up her damage even more. Icon Skill Special.png Draconic AuraIcon Skill Special.png Draconic Aura (3 CD, 200 SP)

Effect: Grants +30% to Atk.
can also be considered since Effie has incredibly high Atk to take advantage of.

For her assist, Icon Skill Assist.png PivotIcon Skill Assist.png Pivot (150 SP)

Effect: Unit moves to opposite side of adjacent ally.
is chosen to increase Effie's range of movement, allowing Effie to move up to 3 spaces a turn depending on ally positioning.

Her C passive slot is left up to team composition considerations and player preference; however, Armor March 3.png Armor March 3 as her C-passive can help her reach her foes. She could instead rely on another ally to give her the movement boost, in which case she could use Panic Ploy 3.png Panic Ploy 3 to help deter enemies with stat buffs.

Her Seal is Attack Plus 3.png Attack +3 to maximize the damage she can deal, although Panic Ploy 3.png Panic Ploy 3 is also acceptable as long as she's not already using that skill as her C passive.

This build is mostly the same as her Brave Lance+ build, but opting for easier to obtain skills like the regular Brave Lance. She still has an incredibly powerful player phase presence, which is improved with Death Blow 3.png Death Blow 3. Her lack of movement means she has a hard time approaching units without heavy positioning assistance however.

As for her Seal, Attack Plus 3.png Attack +3 will help her increase the damage she can dish out. Panic Ploy 3.png Panic Ploy 3 is another option for her to deter opponents with stat buffs.
