This build aims to utilize Jakob's impressive bulk and access to Fighter skills in order to turn Jakob into a very strong mixed phase unit capable of fighting on both Player and Enemy phases.

Jakob's optimal boon is +Atk and optimal bane is -Spd. This is because Jakob cares most about being able to hit hard, and then he uses his skills in order to always double, thus making his (already low) speed completely pointless, and thus safe to lower.

Icon Skill Weapon.png Slaying Bow+ is Jakob's weapon of choice, as it lowers the cooldown on his specials, which help enable Jakob to quickly dispatch his enemies. Overall the +Def refine is the most useful, as it provides more stats that +atk in the defensive stat that is more commonly hit.

Icon Skill Assist.png Pivot and Icon Skill Assist.png Swap help Jakob get into position better. However if one runs Armor March 3.png Armor March 3 Icon Skill Assist.png Reposition becomes a strong tool.

Jakob's special choice largely depends on the direction you want to take the build. Ignis will activate on any player phase combat where the enemy counterattacks. This lets him cut through many high defense units such as a lot of the armors and most of the dragons. While his enemy phase suffers a lot more due to not having an instant special, it still is able to counter a lot of enemy phase focused sets.

On the other hand Glimmer offers a lot of instant burst on the Enemy Phase, which is very nice against magic users and other squishy heroes that try to initiate into Jakob. However, your Player Phase special proc will be Glimmer, which hurts Jakob's ability to take down higher defense units.

Close Counter.png Close Counter enables Jakob's enemy phase, allowing him to counter attack vs melee units that attack him.

Bold Fighter 3.png Bold Fighter 3 lets Jakob invalidate his low speed on Player Phase, giving him the ability to automatically follow up, in addition to lowering the cooldown of his special so he gets access to it faster. This is what enables Jakob to have such a scary player phase.

Jakob's C choice is also dependent on team composition. Without other armors Def Ploy 3.png Def Ploy 3 allows Jakob to utilize his high resistance to both enhance his combat as well as his ally's. However, if you run other armors Armor March 3 is an obvious choice in order to give Jakob and the other unit more movement options.

Jakob's Seal of choice is Quick Riposte 3, as it allows Jakob to activate his special on enemy phase (whether it's a second Glimmer or the first Ignis). Generally Jakob is durable enough to tank two hits.

Bold Fighter + Brave Bow on Trick or Defeat Jakob was already good enough, but it only gets better with the upcoming sacred seal Armored Boots. This gives him the mobility of an infantry unit while at 100% HP, except better because he isn't slowed down by trees. Aether will always trigger unless the opponent has Bowbreaker, Wary Fighter, or is already dead before it happens, and destroys high defense foes while healing him up hopefully back to full HP after being counter-attacked to continue to abuse Armored Boots. Moonbow, alternatively, will always trigger twice, granting more bonus damage than aether overall at 60% per initiation rather than 50%, and will trigger once before the opponent counters, making it less likely for him to take a hit and more likely to remain at 100% HP for Armored Boots. Brave Bow, Death Blow, and Bold Fighter, as well as the attack boon, maximize damage output. A teammate that can boost his attack with a Hone or a Tactic buff will be extremely beneficial.

Bold Butler
Click to show/hide build description
The armored butler is good in Enemy Phase with a typical Slaying Wary build, but he can ditch that and shift to a purely Player Phase focused build, relying on the extra hits of Icon Skill Weapon.png Brave Bow+ and the reliable doubling of Bold Fighter 3.png Bold Fighter 3 to ensure as many kills as possible. With his tankiness, he avoids one-shots by high-damage specials from units that can tank her first hit and, as a colorless unit, he doesn't have to fight with triangle disadvantage (except raven mages).

This build can ORKO almost any unit in the game, even with optimal builds and +10 merging. While the Brave Bow allows Jakob to hit twice as much as other bows, Bold Fighter means he can double any enemy at any HP, despite his awful speed stat, ensuring a quad on any enemy not running Wary Fighter 3.png Wary Fighter 3 or Bowbreaker 3.png Bowbreaker 3. The rest of the kit serves to further cement his killing potential, Death Blow 3.png Death Blow 3 and Attack Plus 3.png Attack +3 giving him extra atk, while the special choice, Icon Skill Special.png Glimmer or Icon Skill Special.png Moonbow, proc on his second (guaranteed) hit, if the enemy can counter him, adding even more burst to his engage. Icon Skill Special.png Luna is another alternative, which needs Quickened Pulse.png Quickened Pulse to proc twice in the fight, like Glimmer does without it.

His assist and C skill is entirely dependant on the team he's in. Icon Skill Assist.png Reposition only works on armor teams with Armor March 3.png Armor March 3, while Swap works on any armor team. For his C, March is optimal as it allows his team to surround him, with armor buffs, to amplify his damage. Alternatively, he can carry an armor buff, a normal buff, or alternatively a ploy, given his high res.

Halloween Jakob is a unique unit that boasts one of the best defensive spreads in the game, exceling in HP, Def, and Res. This makes him very efficient with Distant Def and similar skills.

Guard Bow is very strong on Jakob, it makes him an excellent counter to nearly every ranged attack in the game. This is the staple of the build. When it comes to the refinement it is pretty flexible. I'd suggest +Def over +Atk as bonfire procs will do an extra flat 1 point of damage compared to gaining a potential damage assuming you're Atk is high enough. You'll do likely 0 damage to fellow tanks normally but when bonfire procs you will delete low HP units like no other.

For specials Bonfire is the best option as with armor buffing you can exceed 60 Def on defense which translates to 30 flat damage on proc, even if you would normally hit a 0 for a normal attack. It can be subbed out for Ignis as well if you feel like insta-killing ~80% of all units under the same conditions. A funny alternative would be Aether, the reason for this would be to reactivate your B slot skills and do bonus damage.

For the A slot, I don't recommend running Distant Defense essentially a third time as you will be at a 47 Res without external buffs/debuffs so you can tank even some of the strongest tombs and not fall below 50% HP. Personally I like Svalinn Shield, this negates all armorslayers, heavy spears, and hammers. This allows you to tank close hits pretty safely. This means you only have a weakness to raven tombs but at +12 Res it's still not that bad.

For the B slot, you can use the default Wary Fighter if you like. But if you want to be someone who gives people nightmares, run Guard. Why? Because if they can't damage you normally, they need specials to even tickle Jakob. This is why you will be a Juggernaut. No specials = no damage. Alternatively you can bring Quick Riposte meaning you will kill any ranged unit if bonfire procs. Both skills synergize with Aether too if you want to run it.

Thanks to Setsuna's bow upgrade, archers can now have Close Counter, Close Defense, and Distant Defense on one skillset, making Close Counter much easier to use. And seeing as how Trick or Defeat Jakob is the best defensive archer in the game, he's naturally the best unit for this build. The reason I list Quick Riposte 3 as an alternate to Wary Fighter 3 is because Jakob hits around 40 in defense and resistance. On top of that, if you're running wards on your armor emblem team (which you should be unless you gave Halloween Henry a bladetome) you can turn that 40 in each stat to 52 in each stat if all three allies have Ward Armor and are within two spaces. If you're confident enough in his tankiness (which I would be, if I only had a Jakob that I could give this build to), then it may be in your best interest to give Jakob Quick Riposte to boost his attack output. And with his low speed, he'll always proc bonfire in his first round of combat on enemy phase (unless of course the opponent has bowbreaker), but Wary Fighter is still a safe and reliable option and is by no means bad for this set. Moonbow might be a better special if you're not running Quick Riposte.

With this build, Jakob reaches an impressive 51 defense and 50 resistance when attacked from a range. On top of this, he also has access to one of the best defensive skills in the game in Wary Fighter as an armored unit. If you give him Fortify Armor support from a teammate, he will be completely untouchable by most ranged units unless they trigger a special or are a boosted bladetome user, but he will still be able to take on multiple of these units in a match anyway.
