Now that Weapon Refinery is available—and Beruka’s native Killer weapon can easily be upgraded then refined for a relatively affordable 70 Summoning Stones (20 + 50)—even casual Beruka users have nearly no excuse to augment her awesome physical defense even further with a Defense-refined '"`UNIQ--item-230--QINU`"'. Without taking into account further stat increases from the A-skill slot, Sacred Seal, AND Fortify/Ward boosts, a +0 Beruka with a Defense boon and a Defense-refined Slaying Axe+ sits at a beefy 51 HP and stellar 44 Defense. As usual, '"`UNIQ--item-233--QINU`"' and '"`UNIQ--item-236--QINU`"' procs will be hellishly powerful and only become stronger with new skills, enabling Beruka to essentially ignore her otherwise-terrible Attack while tearing down nearly any unit that can’t off her in time.

Translation: when given all the trimmings, Beruka becomes inhumanly difficult to take down for physical attackers in enemy phase. Obviously, steer clear of magic and ranged units, and don’t overdo it against sword units with high Attack on initiation or defense-decreasing specials, such as Siegbert, Elincia, and Black Knight.

Now, let’s go over said trimmings. '"`UNIQ--item-239--QINU`"' is still the best A-slot passive skill for its value: it can be acquired easily than other passives from any 4-star Seth and gives Beruka a substantial and consistent 5 Def increase. Its Attack penalty does not matter in the grand scheme of things, as Beruka still sports a quite-low Attack even without it. Beruka can also go for more luxurious passives if you are willing to give them; '"`UNIQ--item-242--QINU`"' in particular provides the best Arena optimization due to its higher SP cost and +1 Def over Fortress Def 3. Additionally, Close Def also counts towards Dragonstone damage, making matches against Fae and Nowi significantly more favorable despite Beruka’s below-average Resistance. Mentions of honor include '"`UNIQ--item-245--QINU`"' (budget) and '"`UNIQ--item-248--QINU`"' (less valuable than Close Def but can still be used if lacking that).

'"`UNIQ--item-251--QINU`"' (or '"`UNIQ--item-254--QINU`"' for those on a budget) guarantees a counterattack for Beruka when at high HP, which is significant as she will need that extra attack to successfully kill most baited units with her chosen special. The combination of Quick Riposte, a defensive A-skill, and Beruka’s special is already potent in itself and requires little tweaking. '"`UNIQ--item-257--QINU`"', however, is also worth consideration, as it enables Beruka to confidently go toe-to-toe with attackers without fear of their own special (especially Luna) activating and ruining an otherwise nice matchup.

Beruka’s C-skill slot is flexible and depends on team composition. For flier teams, '"`UNIQ--item-260--QINU`"' or '"`UNIQ--item-263--QINU`"' are very good for offensive support, especially considering Beruka will almost never initiate offensively herself. For more general teams, '"`UNIQ--item-266--QINU`"' or any Hone/Fortify skill are also worth considering. If running Panic Ploy in the C slot is too restricting, you can use its Sacred Seal version. However, Beruka can benefit more from '"`UNIQ--item-269--QINU`"', because despite all her physical bulk, she is still extremely vulnerable to archers. Taking this seal allows her to negate that weakness and utilize her bulk to tank archers who might otherwise defeat her.

As far as boons are concerned, a Defense boon is obvious. Due to Beruka's incorrigibly low Speed, it can be safely lowered for the bane. Although a Resistance bane is tempting due to Beruka's also low Resistance stat, it makes compromises her actually decent matchups against Nowi and Fae.

Donnel's hardy stat spread makes him a perfect candidate for Spring Xander's Carrot Lance (if you're unfortunate enough to have one.) This build aims to have Donnel become a self sustaining physical wall on the enemy phase that can do some respectable damage as well, just be sure to keep him away from mages. (Plus the carrot just feels so right in his hands)

Weapon: Carrot Lance+ sees far better use in the hands of our favorite farm boy Donnel. His high attack and solid defense allow him to tank hits and hit back with some force, while benefiting from the passive sustain of a refined Carrot Lance. Def refinement is the best choice as it feeds into Bonfire and makes him more resilient.

Assist: Swap is taken to pull Donnel's teammates out of tight spots and tank the hit for them, but really any positioning skill works.

Special: Bonfire is a clear choice due to Donnel's massive defense stat, which will allow him to chunk his foes when it goes off.

A Passive: Close Def 3 is the better choice for Donnel as it doesn't detract from his offensive power, and he'll mostly be seeing action during the enemy phase with this build, but Fortress Def 3 is a solid budget choice if you don't have access to Close Def 3 since his attack is higher than average, or intend to run Close Def 3 as his seal.

B Passive: Guard 3 is the ideal B skill for this build as it keeps Donnel's foes from triggering their specials on him, which let's him last a lot longer against his foes.

C Passive: Whatever fits your team's needs will do for Donnel's C skill. However since he'll likely be in the fray against physical attackers a lot a good choice would be Threaten Def 3, which lets him hit hard in the player phase against any foes that attacked him.

Sacred Seal: There are plenty of solid options for seals now which give the build a lot more flexibility. Quick Riposte 3 is the seal of choice for Donnel, since it lets him ignore his low speed when retaliating and get in two hits. Alternatively you can double down on Close Def 3 and have his defense stat hit insane heights.

Eirika seems to be your run-of-the-mill, supportive, sword unit. She doesn’t have the best stats, but her refined Sieglinde’s effect allows her to become quite the powerhouse. As long as she has a decrease in HP, any stat can receive the boon—just note that Fortress Def will cut her Atk by 3. Her Sieglinde, when refined, will give her 3 HP, so the detriment in HP is negated.

If your team doesn’t have any allies who can buff stats, then give Eirika Rally Def/Res. She’ll be able to provide a buff in all four stats, with the help of her Sieglinde and Hone Spd 3—perfect for Blade tome users! Otherwise, if you wanna focus on repositioning, then go with—obviously—Reposition.

Bonfire is favored for this set because it focuses more on her Def. However, her base Res isn’t too bad, so if you don’t have any other options, you can go with Iceberg instead. Ignis and Glacies can be substituted, but only if you’re running Steady Breath.

Speaking of Steady Breath, this gives Eirika higher special uptime. Her special will charge instantly every time, as long as the foe doesn’t run Guard. However, if you don’t have access to a million Brave Ikes, and you have some Dark Knights or Shiros lying around, you can give her Steady Stance instead. While her special doesn’t charge as quickly, she’ll have slightly more Def as a caveat, so win-win!

Vantage and Swordbreaker are sorta throw-away options. She’s already quite fast—especially with buffs from other allies, so Vantage is the more favored option. It can come in handy if a weakened foe is coming in for the kill.

Hone Spd just provides a Spd boost. If you have a specific team composition that requires a different C Skill, then, by all means, pick whatever fits!

Fortress Def sacrifices some of her Atk for even more Def. When used in tandem with her Steady Breath and Sieglinde buffs, she can reach as high as 41. If you don’t wanna sacrifice her already-low Atk, then Def+3 or Atk/Def 2 can be substituted.

This is a multipurpose set, which can allow Eirika to be both offensive and defensive, if played correctly. However, she still suffers from relatively low Atk and can’t do well against Lance units.

In regards to stats, Gerome is very similar to his mother. Although he doesn't have merge potential like Cherche, he is still a solid character to utilize. Gerome comes with a new axe in the form of Poleaxe, which grants effective damage against cavalry units. With 14 mt, Poleaxe+ is a viable weapon of choice for him. While he will not be able to double due to his poor speed, he will hit harder to accommodate for his lack of doubles. This could be alleviated by equipping a Brave Axe+ on Gerome. With his high 38 attack, he will dish out a lot of damage, especially with a damaging special. Gerome comes with Rally Atk/Def which can be very useful to raise an ally's stats. Reposition is another viable choice to give Gerome if you prefer getting allies out of range. Because Gerome has a natural defense value of 34, Bonfire is one of Gerome's best specials as it provides him an extra 17 points of damage when activated. Luna is another optimal special as Luna considers the enemy's defense values to be reduced by half during calculation. For his A skill, he comes with Fortress Def 3 by default, providing more physical bulk for him. If you are looking for something more offensive, Death Blow 3 enables Gerome to reach his highest attack value. For the B slot, Gerome also comes with Hit and Run, a very versatile skill for mounted units. Drag Back is another optional choice if your playstyle prefers bringing in enemy units closer for your other allies to take out. Other B skills such as Axebreaker, Wings of Mercy, and Threaten Def 3 is one of Gerome's best choices for his C skill. With Threaten Def 3, Gerome is able to hit even harder during the enemy's next actions. Goad Fliers is another contender for the C slot as it synergizes with Rally Atk/Def and provides more stats to allies during combat. For the sacred seal, it is rather flexible however there are some that are worth utilizing with Gerome. Equipping Iote's Shield removes Gerome's weakness against bows, making him bulkier in the process. Threaten Atk and Threaten Spd synergize with a Threaten Def on the C slot. Close Defense is another solid choice on Gerome to provide him with more defense during combat from enemy melee units.

Gwendolyn, as a unit, can struggle to stand out from the pool or armored lances. Hardin pulls off a similar defensive statline whilst sporting better Atk and immediate access to rare and valuable skills. Effie, meanwhile, boasts significantly poorer tanking potential but has such fantastic offensive potential that she's generally a preferred option. Despite this, Gwendolyn still boasts what is arguably the best defensive statline, due to her HP and Defense being the highest in her class. The extreme conclusion of this is, therefore, to build into a formidable wall of a mixed tank, arguably the best such in the game.

A very expensive upgrade to the Adorable Wall build, but optimised for physical defense and special damage. With 50 def on all phases, an '"`UNIQ--item-685--QINU`"' proc adds 40+10 damage, more than making up for her somewhat low atk. Taking into account '"`UNIQ--item-688--QINU`"' and '"`UNIQ--item-691--QINU`"', Gwendolyn gets a guaranteed Ignis proc every enemy phase while also denying the foe their special. Her absurd physical bulk should ensure that any melee units will do very little damage, if they damage her at all, ensuring she never drops out of Special Fighter range.

This build combines the strengths of several other lance units onto one unit, namely Luka’s sheer defense, Sharena’s solid speed, and Ephraim’s buffing capability. These qualities make her a strong and incredibly versatile Enemy Phase unit.

'"`UNIQ--item-377--QINU`"' is a strong skill for Brave Lucina, dialing her neutral attack down from 50 to a respectable 47 while boosting her defense to a fantastic 39. Her solid 36 speed lets her avoid doubles on most common swords and lances that she’ll be tanking, and '"`UNIQ--item-380--QINU`"' allows her to ORKO them.

Quick Riposte also synergizes well with '"`UNIQ--item-383--QINU`"' and '"`UNIQ--item-386--QINU`"', allowing her to save teammates and charge the 5-turn cooldown special faster than usual. Aether provides her with self healing and the ability to punch through bulkier lance units.

The combination of '"`UNIQ--item-389--QINU`"' and '"`UNIQ--item-392--QINU`"' make her a great buffer, especially when combined with the '"`UNIQ--item-395--QINU`"' seal.

Alternatively, players lucky enough to score themselves multiple Brave Ikes can choose to sacrifice one to pass Brave Lucina '"`UNIQ--item-398--QINU`"', which lowers the cooldown of Aether and more importantly, boosts her defense without lowering her attack. '"`UNIQ--item-401--QINU`"' can run as an alternative B skill, since ORKOing sword units is not entirely necessary for her, while she does the the extra help in taking down other lances. HP +3 Sacred Seal can be used to slightly increase her tanking ability as well.

Obviously her main weakness is her pitiful 16 res, which can be patched up by tank mage units like Julia, Sonya, Mae, and Distant Def Celica, as well as her banner mates DC Brave Ike and Brave Lyn.

If you want to use Lukas as a wall in the single most literal sense of the phrase, you've come to the right place. With Steady Stance 3 and Close Defense 3 stacked, you'll have 53 Def on enemy phase, making nearly everything bounce right off you. Even strong axe units like Hector and Legion can only hope to do chip damage to Lukas like this. Fortress Def 3 is a good budget option, only sacrificing 1 Def and 3 Atk for something infinitely easier to obtain. -Spd will drop him down to a disgusting 19 Spd, but this is all part of the plan. See, if you get doubled under Quick Riposte's effects, you can proc a 3-charge special in one round of combat. Ignis will become a 3-charge special thanks to that shiny new Slaying Lance+, and since Steady Stance and Close Def both count towards its damage, Lukas's second attack will have a whopping 42 damage added onto it every single time. Because his Spd is so low, we can ensure he gets hit twice every single round, and that 53 Def, in addition to adding to his damage, will also make him take no damage from anyone not carrying an Emerald Axe. Mages, of course, eat this particular Lukas alive, but that's never his strong suit anyway. Keep him away from mages, and he'll wall out every 1-range unit in the game.
