This high-investment set seeks to make Xander as impenetrable an enemy-phase fortress as possible.

Siegfried is a must, as the ability to counterattack at any range makes Xander excellent at tanking and killing all manner of threats.

Swap or Reposition gets more fragile allies out of harm's way. Swap is best used in tighter spaces.

Bonfire and Ignis both scale off of Xander's incredibly high DEF stat, supplying an inordinate amount of damage whenever they activate. Bonfire is best used for enemy phase killing, while Ignis gives Xander nuking capability on player phase.

Steady Stance 4 grants him a blisteringly high DEF stat on enemy phase as well as preventing enemies from charging their specials- a very important thing to do when it is almost guaranteed that Xander will be doubled.

Quick Riposte 3 allows Xander to fire off Bonfire whenever he is doubled and has high enough HP, making him exceedingly dangerous. At higher merges, Bonfire can easily do 20+ damage whenever it activates.

Though Xander wants to receive buffs, it is also wise to make sure he gives them to his allies. Any nature of Cavalry buffs works, but Hone is best used to make player phase allies all the more dangerous. Panic Ploy can be used instead to give enemies who rely on buffs a very hard time.

Finally, the Warding Stance seal makes it so that Xander can patch his mediocre RES against both mages and dragons- a very important factor in a meta that is still driven by Bold Fighter dragons such as Duma and Legendary Tiki.

This build is designed to make Xander as impossible to hit with melee weapons as possible.

The Close Defense A skill and Sacred Seal combination brings his defense to 49 when attacked by a melee user, which he can capitalize on with Bonfire or Ignis for a guaranteed 24 damage, plus whatever he'd normally deal. Using Vantage or Renewal as a B skill makes him even harder to kill. With Vantage, once he does take damage, he starts making enemies regret attacking him before they get the chance to hurt him. With Renewal, he can make sure he needs to fear no threat that isn't a Blue Mage.

His C Skill really is quite flexible, especially if he's not on a cavalry team. If he is, then any of the usual Cavalry C skills work wonders, but if he's not I tend to enjoy Savage Blow. It simply helps him soften up any threats that will come at him next.

Xander performs well as a tank, thanks to his incredible physical bulk and his ability to stand up to ranged attackers with his '"`UNIQ--item-257--QINU`"'.

'"`UNIQ--item-260--QINU`"' is his preferred Assist, used to ferry units around for either offensive or defensive purposes. '"`UNIQ--item-263--QINU`"' performs a similar role, and is better used in tighter spaces.

With Xander's high Def, he can put '"`UNIQ--item-266--QINU`"' to good use, but '"`UNIQ--item-269--QINU`"' can be used for its faster charge instead.

Both of Xander's A skills further improve his bulk. '"`UNIQ--item-272--QINU`"' is preferred as it boosts his overall stats and it also helps increase his poor Spd. It will inflict recoil damage however, so the player should be sure to keep Xander healthy in game modes of endurance. '"`UNIQ--item-275--QINU`"' is another, more expensive option that lets him withstand ranged attacks better.

'"`UNIQ--item-278--QINU`"' is Xander's preferred B skill. As Xander lacks the Spd to double his opponents, this skill would allow him to retaliate twice against them. '"`UNIQ--item-281--QINU`"' is another option that will allow Xander to strike first when he's weakened, potentially getting the jump on more fragile foes.

Xander is best used on a cavalry team, so his C skill should be a cavalry buff of some sort like '"`UNIQ--item-284--QINU`"'.

At the core of this build is the interaction between Xander's all-range counter with '"`UNIQ--item-345--QINU`"', good attack, low speed, high defense, and Ignis. Due to his high defense, Xander will in most cases survive being doubled by a physical attacker, and will double back due to Quick Riposte, likely earning a kill. This leaves his Ignis charged and ready to nuke the next enemy with an attack that very few units are capable of surviving. This build serves well on a Tempest Trial team, as Xander is a tanky unit who will last a long time, and this build forgoes Fury so as not to suffer chip damage. '"`UNIQ--item-348--QINU`"' is generally the best assist for tanks, as it allows them to reliably get into the front line to bait an enemy. '"`UNIQ--item-351--QINU`"' is chosen for reliability and being active for both phases, which is important due to Xander doing so much of his damage on enemy phase. '"`UNIQ--item-354--QINU`"' is essential for Xander to be able to kill with his counterattacks, as well as to completely charge '"`UNIQ--item-357--QINU`"' in one combat. C-slot is flexible to suit the needs of the specific team in question, although 2-range buffs allow flexibility as to where Xander sets up to fight. '"`UNIQ--item-360--QINU`"' seal to improve on his already great defense.
