Alfonse's weapon refine gives him some new tools in order to bolster his strengths of fighting on color units. In addition, due to the new Arena that puts a spotlight on forcing players to get kills with their bonus units, being able to secure Alfonse a niche is important to scoring well.

Weapon

His native weapon, Icon Class Red Sword Fólkvangr can be refined to receive Brazen Atk Def 3 Brazen Atk/Def 3, while his special refine gives him Triangle Adept 3 Triangle Adept 3. This is quite powerful in securing his green matchups, especially against dragons who target his low res, and is thus a very strong option for him. Alternately, just going the +Def refine helps his sword matchups, while not completely compromising his blue matchups. If your team can support Alfonse going for last hits on blue units, this refine or even +Res for green dragon matchups would be better.

Special

Alfonse has fairly good defense, especially when boosted by Fólkvangr when he is at 80%, and thus either Skilliconspecial Bonfire or Skilliconspecial Ignis works best for him. Bonfire will be charged up for a second strike after fighting a sword unit or a slow axe unit, while Ignis is better if the first unit is faster than Alfonse, doubling him and thus allowing for an extremely powerful follow up turn.

A Skill

There are a couple of A skills that suit Alfonse well. The first is Fury 3 Fury 3, which gives him stats depending on if you want to player phase swords or enemy phase, while also getting him closer to the 80% range for Fólkvangr.

Alternately, one can rely on the Triangle Adept effect of Fólkvangr's special refine to carry his first combat and go for Brazen Atk Def 3 Brazen Atk/Def 3 to make his later combats more powerful, even if he can't hit the enemy twice. This also lets this set score at the second highest bracket Alfonse can score in (if one changes his special and assist to Aether and a Dual Rally).

B Skill

The best budget B skill for Alfonse is Swordbreaker 3 Swordbreaker 3. He can either rely on the Triangle Adept effect of Fólkvangr's special refine or just the def refine to take minimal damage from green units, while still allowing Alfonse to have strong sword matchups.

C Skill

As with most units, Alfonse's C slot is flexible and should be based on whatever his team needs the most. Typically, this is a buff of your choice.

Seal

While Swordbreaker allows Alfonse to always double swords, the Quick Riposte 3 Quick Riposte 3 seal gives him strong enemy phase, letting him double green units, as well as other opposing sword units utilizing Swordbreaker. While it won't always be active with the Brazen effect from Fólkvangr or the skill, it carries his first combat which is extremely important for setting up any build that utilizes Brazen effects.

Alfonse is a straightforward unit that wants to play towards his strengths. With minimal investment he can be built to be quite effective against a specific array of units.

Brave Alfonse
Icon Skill Special Luna / Aether
Traits: Normalized
Click to show/hide build description
For those with the resources, this build maximizes Alfonse's combat potential by allowing him to reliably tackle both sword and axe units.

Despite not having IVs, Alfonse's base attack of 35 is sufficient for him to effectively use a Brave Sword. This allows him to bypass his low speed stat and always attack twice as long as he initiates combat. The -5 speed penalty is negligible due to his already low speed.

As with all Brave weapon builds that do not need the ability to perform quadruple attacks, Death Blow 3 is the best A slot for Brave Sword Alfonse, giving him an extra 12 attack when he initiates combat. No other skill comes close to providing such a great offensive boost, which is critical due to the low might of Brave weapons.

Although Axebreaker 3 may seem like the go-to option, Swordbreaker 3 is preferred since it allows him to survive an enemy phase against sword units if needed. Axebreaker is unnecessary to one round common axe units other than Hector and Amelia, and those two matchups are remedied by giving Alfonse the Hone Attack 3 buff. Swordbreaker will also allow him to kill sword units on player phase if you him to.

As with most units, Alfonse's C slot is flexible and should be based on whatever his team needs the most. Typically, this is a buff of your choice.

For his special, either Luna or Aether will work. Luna is the more practical of the two when you need Alfonse to duel two or fewer units, which is the most common scenario. Aether is superior in cases where you need Alfonse to fight three or more units, typically in Arena Assault, due to the sustain it provides.

For the Sacred Seal slot, Attack +1 is recommended as it complements his Brave Sword well. The extra attack is also useful once you face units with higher merges in arena.

Steady Askran
Defense Plus W Wo Dao+ (Def) / Fólkvangr
Traits: Normalized
Click to show/hide build description
This build aims to make Alfonse into a more enemy phase physical brawler type hero vs. the other more player phase-oriented builds.

The main star of the show is Steady Breath Steady Breath which not only gives Alfonse even more bulk, but also allows him to charge his special more quickly. Thanks to this, Alfonse can make use of his solid Def and Skilliconspecial Ignis to provide huge bursts of damage. Couple this with Quick Riposte 3 Quick Riposte 3 for the ability to counterattack twice for more special charges, and Alfonse becomes capable of taking out even a few blues who engage on him (eg. Catria, Tana, by the skin of his teeth, unbuffed Cordelia.

For his weapon choice, Icon Class Red Sword Wo Dao+ gives Alfonse an additional +10 damage when his special activates. This is mainly useful for picking up foes who would otherwise tank his QR counterattack damage (eg. Zephiel, Effie, and Subaki). Icon Class Red Sword Fólkvangr misses out on these tankier foes, but still provides similar and more consistent results thanks to its additional Mt (eg. On Player Phase without special, he can take out variants of Brave Lyn while Wo Dao+ fails to in some cases).

Taking Quick Riposte, however, does mean he dies to popular Moonbow-equipped Red Swords such as Ryoma and Ike. Swordbreaker 3 Swordbreaker 3 can then be used as a tech option to handle these threats but at the expense of coverage against other heroes that QR provides.

Finally, for his assist, a positioning assist like Skilliconassist Reposition provides utility and mobility support for the team and is a strong option to take. His C passive is flexible and should be taken based on the needs of the team (although if cost is an issue, his default Spur Atk 3 Spur Atk 3 can be taken).

The build is designed to capitalise on Alfonse's above average Atk and Def to give him an anti-meta role to counter most of the common armors that he is likely to face as a bonus unit.

Icon Class Red Sword Armorsmasher+ allows Alfonse to OHKO basically all green and red armors and deal considerable damage against blue armors, potentially lethal even to them when combined with a special. Def Refine allows Alfonse to tank more damage ontop of his decent defenses.

Atk Def Bond 3 Atk/Def Bond 3 is luxury fodder to maximise his bulk against armor units as well as to keep him above threshold for Quick Riposte/Swordbreaker. Fury 3 Fury 3 gives Alfonse more opportunities to actively take OHKOs against enemy armors but reduces Quick Riposte to potentially a one use ability, although if Alfonse OHKO's his first battle on Player Phase, he can still use Quick Riposte on his subsequent battle.

Quick Riposte 3 Quick Riposte 3/Close Def 3 Close Def 3 allows Alfonse to bulk up considerably but may die to faster red swords in the meta. Swordbreaker 3 Swordbreaker 3/Quick Riposte 3 Quick Riposte 3 reduces Alfonse's bulk but allows him to directly counter major sword threats as well.

C Slot is flexible for whatever the team needs, most likely a Spur or Hone/Fort. Skilliconassist Reposition is a universally good melee assist the slot can also be used for rallies and other abilities.

Speedy Tankfonse
Click to show/hide build description
This build basically exists to boost Alfonse's speed high enough (Weapon Refine + A skill) so that he doesn't get doubled and it uses Quick Riposte to guarantee the double (Or guarantee it one time before you rely on Brazen Atk/Spd if you are using it). Even Spd Wave also bursts his speed further while providing a nice boost to his team. Any way of boosting his speed is welcomed (Like the Earth Blessing with Female Grima being on your team, a Speed Tactics User or the use of any mixed spur with atk/spd or def/spd). Sol is just for the sustain.

Brazen Prince
Click to show/hide build description
This set aims to capitalize on the new effect of Folkvangr: Brazen Atk/Def 3. Using the prf weapon along with Brazen Atk/Def 3 as an A slot allows for a +14 to Attack and Defense when within the threshold, which is conveniently within 10 damage, so Ardent Sacrifice allows you to reach the mark without combat. Alternatively, you can use Reposition or another movement skill and sustain the necessary damage in combat. The refinement for attack allows for more wins, and the Brazen Atk/Res 3 seal gives him more attacking power and some more Resistance so he can deal with dragons a little bit better. Another option for the seal is Deflect Melee 3, which can help against speedy units. If neither of these are available, Attack/Def +2 also works.

Chill Def 3 works well to soften up bulky opponents, but Swordbreaker 3 is another option if the former is unavailable, as it prevents doubles and allows for easy kills on sword lords. The C slot is flexible, but Threaten Atk 3 is recommended to nullify some damage. However, Threaten Def 3 can be used instead, as it makes opponents easier to kill. Alternatively, you can use Smoke skills, like Atk Smoke 3 or Def Smoke 3, but that depends on your preference. Finally, Bonfire's nuking potential can wipe almost any unit off the map with the +14 to the Defense stat, going from a decent 32 to a whopping 46, allowing him to annihilate almost anything. If you want to ensure your victory, you can use Ignis instead.

This build makes Alfonse one of the most terrifying units in the game, and that's saying a lot, considering him before the Askr refinement update. With this power, the Prince of Askr can finally become the warrior that his kingdom needs.

Dipshit (Nuke Memefonse Build)
Click to show/hide build description
With the recent release of the Brazen Atk/Def seal from the Hostile Springs Tempest Trials, Alfonse was bestowed a memetic, albeit destructive niche among all heroes: The ability to triple-stack the same Brazen skill in his set. This set attempts to make Alfonse a hilariously bulky nuke upon meeting certain conditions.

The Assist is pivotal to this build, as it is what allows Alfonse to drop his HP low enough in order for all his Brazen skills to trigger, pushing him at a shattering 74 Atk and 53 Def with an Atk-refined Fólkvangr (72/57 with a Def refine), turning him into the ultimate bulky attacker that will destroy everything but the tankiest blues. Whether you choose Ardent Sacrifice or Reciprocal Aid is up to you and depending on the unit you intend on pairing him with.

Vantage is preferred here as Alfonse will usually be set up and ready during enemy phase right after using his Assist, allowing him to fire devastating attacks before the enemy can even attack him; However, pay mind the HP requirements for Vantage and the Brazen skills differ by 5%, so you might occasionally get a bad surprise due to a single HP of difference. Alternately, if you want to push the meme factor of this set to its absolute maximum, Atk/Def Link is thrown in to give him an extra bonus from using his Assist, making his final numbers 80 Atk and 59 Def with an Atk-refined Fólkvangr (78 Atk and 63 Def if Def-refined). Note, though, that said bonus only applies for a turn, so it's more one-time-nukey than anything; besides, this skill's usefulness is vastly reduced if you already have another teammate ready to dispense Attack and Defense bonuses through Waves, Spurs, etc.

C Passive is flexible, it generally depends on team composition, though Waves are always good to go, especially the Atk and Def one to complement this meme build. If another teammate has Odd Def Wave, Alfonse will want the Even variety, and vice versa; etc. Be careful about running Waves if you also run Atk/Def Link in the B slot, again, as both are bonuses and therefore do not stack (only the highest bonus applies).

Even though it sounds tempting to have Dragon Fang or Draconic Aura as a Special due to how ridiculously high Alfonse's Attack becomes by virtue of his skills, he'll actually deal several digits of damage more with Bonfire or Ignis in spite of his Defense being lower simply by virtue of the stat percentage taken into account being far greater. Whichever Defense-scaling Special you choose ultimately depends on whether you want the occasional absurd nuke or more damage consistency.

A few other options exist, such as giving him Quick Riposte in his B slot as his Speed is pretty awful in nowadays' powercrept metagame. Feel free to experiment and choose what's best for you.

Oh also, did I mention this set dies to mages quicker than Gunnthrá when she first physically appeared in Book II? Don't be a dipshit. Don't throw Alfonse in The Reinhardt™'s attack range and you'll be fine.

Alfonse: Prince of Askr
Click to show/hide build description
Technically 2 different builds that mainly do the same thing which is Alfonse being a physical enemy phase tank that either heals himself with Aether or do more damage with Ignis, I use the main build with his Folkvangr/Aether build and the Unbound Blade build is just there if you wanna go all in for the powered up Ignis. Folkvangr with Wrath is very reliant on Alfonse being under 75% but if you don't want to risk getting hit then either Unbound Blade or Carrot Cudgel with Distant Foil/Counter, Close Def or anything that gives him more power in enemy phase (or dual phase). Wrath and Quick Riposte are very good choices for obvious reasons but Lull Atk/Def can be subbed in for dual phase or Null C-Disrupt so he is able to counter without worry. Threat Atk/Def for C skill to gain stats while debuffing enemies if they're near but overall the C slot is flexible. Again S Slot is also flexible but I put QR 3 or a Stance skill as that is what I run with my Alfonse. 73.220.205.78 11:11, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
